The bridges of Paro County

Bhutan is mountains and river valleys.  Whenever you have rivers, eventually you have to cross them.  This is a typical "fancy" bridge crossing a river to a monastery-temple.  The prayer flags hanging from it are for good luck.  When you cross, you think you might actually need it.

This bridge is about 600 years old, with some modifications of course.  The chain link fence bottom is not quite that old.  Given it's age and the weather conditions it suffered over 600 years, it's in remarkable shape. But you really don't want to look down.

The smaller bridge is for animals and people carrying loads.  Planks are much easier to walk on.

  1. seems the prayer flags serve a dual purpose of not allowing one to see exactly where they are.
