The most interesting part of a return visit to a city is to witness the changes over the passage of time. Bangkok used to be a city of millions of motor bikes and tuk tuks all vying for their place in the never ending suicidal rat race. Now, many more people have traded in their two wheels for four, plunging the city into a virtual standstill.
we hired a taxi for the day only to spend the day sitting in traffic. Our tour consisted of a stop at mbk, the six story market in the city center where you can find anything your heart desires, and the palace with the golden reclining Buddha (where we were caught in a monsoon rain without our umbrellas).
At around 2:00 we asked the driver to take us for lunch at Cabbages and Condoms. We could have walked there faster. The red lights were so long that Augie started timing them. One was 19 minutes! When the light finally turned green, it lasted about 30 seconds. Interestingly, there were no honking horns (I think it may be illegal), although I'm sure there was a lot of screaming and crying inside the cars -- there certainly was in ours.
Our lunch turned into a 6:00 pm dinner. But it was worth the wait. Cabbages and Condoms was fun and the food was good.
